Safeguarding
Issue: Social networking sites can be used for ‘grooming’ young or vulnerable people. Grooming is a process where strangers befriend unsuspecting young or vulnerable people on-line. The purpose is to persuade or trap the young person into taking part in unwanted sexual activities. Sexual assault can occur if the young person is persuaded to meet with the stranger.

Action:
- - Be careful when you use chat rooms or social networking sites.
- - Never give out personal details on-line.
- - Do not give your real name. Choose a username.
- - Do not share your phone number, your address or even your e-mail address.
- - Do not agree to meet up with people that you have only ever met on-line.
- - Be disbelieving. Is your 17 year old female on-line friend actually a 50 year old male?
- - Report all suspicious on-line behaviour.
